Exclusive: Goalhanger, the influential British podcast company co-founded by Gary Lineker, is closing its TV production arm to focus on audio content.
Lineker and his business partner Tony Pastor are liquidating Goalhanger Films Ltd, the original incarnation of the band, which was founded in 2014.
Goalhanger Films has produced documentaries including Football, Prince William and our mental health For the BBC and Keane and Vieira – Best Enemies For ITV.
Pastor told Deadline that the success of the podcast including The rest is history and The rest is entertainment It means the company has shifted its focus to Goalhanger Podcasts.
“We effectively shut down movies and created a dedicated company focused on podcasting,” he said. “There was a period where I ran them side by side, but the growth of podcasts was so tremendous and TV was challenged, so now we’ve done some housekeeping.”
“We’ve gone from a production company completely subject to commissioners and broadcaster budgets to a degree of self-control where we’re commissioning ourselves,” he added.
The decision to close Goalhanger Films comes as the BBC announced that Lineker will step down as presenter of the Premier League. Match of the day next year.
Lineker, the BBC’s highest-paid broadcaster, will continue to host the corporation’s live football matches, including coverage of the 2026 World Cup.
