A young diver has died Tuesday in a hospital in the Chatham Islands, a remote archipelago in eastern New Zealand, after being attacked by a shark while scuba diving, according to the Oceanic country’s police.

The victim was taken to a hospital in the Chatham Islands, about 800 kilometers from the South Islandwhere he died as a result of serious injuries caused by the shark.

The deceased, identified by the New Zealand media as Jade Kahukore-Dixon, age 24.had formed the sole proprietorship Nomad Diving in June of this year to engage in commercial spearfishing in Chatham.

While it is not known what type of shark killed the young man, his father, Jacky Dixon, has told New Zealand news portal Stuff who believes that it is a great white shark.

Unlike countries such as Australia or South Africa, shark attacks are not common in New Zealand.. The last such incident occurred in December 2023, when a 21-year-old woman was attacked by a shark in a Southland estuary at the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island.
