Joker: Folie à Deux Director Todd Phillips has one solution to improve movie theaters: Do away with showing commercials before the movie.
Talking to Empire magazine as part of a poll of filmmakers on what the future of film and entertainment will look like – from artificial intelligence to streaming devices versus theaters and beyond – the multiple Oscar nominee gave a slightly different answer than the rest.
“Stop showing commercials before movies,” he said. “We paid for our tickets. We’re excited to be there. Commercials tend to take the air out of the room. Presumably the filmmaker is referring to ads that play before promotions for upcoming features.
In the same interview. Anora Director Sean Baker lamented the pivot of filmmakers toward streaming and the world of television while embracing digital versus analog cinematography. On the other side of the spectrum. Freaks and Geeks Creator Paul Feig praised gamers who have “really stepped up” in an ever-changing industry.
Phillips’ latest endeavor was a box office bomb, which was produced with a budget of about $200 million from Warner Bros. It was heavily criticized and didn’t reach commercial audiences either, and is now at risk of losing nearly as much money as it cost to produce. His colleague Paul Schrader expressed his distaste for the film, saying he went shopping while it was playing in theaters and considered it “really bad music.” However, another industry vet, Quentin Tarantino, praised the DC movie, calling it “you” to Hollywood and moviegoers.
