The European Film Academy has announced the nominees in the main categories of the 37th European Film Awards ahead of the ceremony to be held in the Swiss lakeside town of Lucerne on December 7.

French Oscar entry Emilia Perez by Jacques Audiard and The next room by Pedro Almodóvar leads the nominations, which are divided into four categories.

The awards, which are voted on by the Berlin-based European Film Academy’s roughly 5,000 members across Europe, are seen as an indicator that European films are likely to gain momentum in the U.S. awards season.

Last year’s Best European Film winner Anatomy of a fall received five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress (Sandra Buller), with director Justine Treat and co-writer Arthur Harari winning for Best Screenplay.

This year’s ceremony in Lucerne will be the last time it will be held in December with the dates changing to mid-January, starting with the 39th edition in 2026, as part of a strategy to position the awards within the broader awards season conversation on both sides of the Atlantic. From the Atlantic.

Craft category awards for Best European Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Makeup and Hair, Original Score, Sound and Visual Effects are determined by a specialized jury and are selected from films selected from the Academy’s core selection.

EFA previously announced the nominations for the European Animated Film category in October.
