Whoopi Goldberg celebrated her 69th birthday Wednesday on “The View,” but the festivities were bittersweet. Goldberg told her hosts that the bakery that made the cake for her big day didn’t take her order at first. He added that he believed his political affiliation was at least part of the reason, prompting a contrary reaction from the bakery owner.
Goldberg shared that she ordered a dessert that was one of her mother’s favorites: A cupcake made with layers of sponge cake, Bavarian cream, fruit and topped with cherries. “My birthday dessert today was one of my mom’s favorites from when I was a kid, and she talked about it all the time, it’s called Charlotte Russe. It’s a cake with whipped cream and a cherry on top. He explained: “Now, I have to tell you that Charlotte Russe has no political leanings and the place that made it refused to make it for me.”
After the reaction of Sunny Hostin and Sarah Haines, Goldberg added: “They said their ovens were broken, and all kinds of things, but people went looking for them anyway, so I don’t tell them who made them.” She also said she assumed the reason the bakery rejected the order “couldn’t have been because I’m a woman, but maybe they didn’t like my politics.”
“But it’s okay, because you know what? Listen, this is my mom’s celebration. Take this and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you all for celebrating my birthday today.
Entertainment Weekly later identified the bakery as Holterman’s Bakery on Staten Island because of the packaging of the cakes. Owner Jill Holterman told the outlet that Goldberg ordered the cakes for his appearance on a Nov. 6 talk show and a Nov. 13 episode of “The View.”
“We were asked and we had issues with our kettles,” he said, before adding that he declined the requests because he “didn’t want to make a commitment I can’t fulfill.” But Holterman also confirmed Goldberg’s claim that another unidentified woman was able to pick up her order on the same day.
Holterman also said that his bakery operates in a building that is nearly a century old. “I told Whoopi, I can’t do that right now,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We have so many things to do with my kettle,” because the building dates back to 1930, so when he called me, I had no idea [if we could] He bakes everything.”
