Chris Martin falls on stage during Coldplay concert in Melbourne

Is Melbourne cursed? A few weeks after Olivia Rodrigo unexpectedly fell into a trap door on stage at the city’s Rod Laver Arena, Chris Martin did the same at Marvel Stadium.

Coldplay was performing in Melbourne as part of the band’s Music of the Spheres tour. After their rendition of “Everglow” Martin stumbled backwards while addressing the crowd and fell through a similar trap door. A crew member reached through the trap door and caught Martin as he fell, but the attacker was clearly still shaken.

As he climbed up, Martin noted that “this wasn’t planned.” He added to his crew: “Thank you so much for following me. Holy shit. That was almost a YouTube moment. (Apologies to Martin: it’s now a YouTube moment.)

The accident was not unlike what happened to Rodrigo, who fell while teasing the audience during her concert on October 13. After the violent fall, Rodrigo immediately got up and said, “Oh my God, that was fun! I’m fine!” she added: “Sometimes there’s just a hole in the stage. That’s good! Well, where have you been?”

Last week, Rodrigo told Jimmy Fallon Tonight’s show that it was “actually a beautiful thing” that she fell while in Australia, shortly after performing at the Philippine Arena in Manila.

“I’m really glad this happened in hindsight,” she said. “That was my next stop – Australia after the Philippines. I was thinking about my family, my heritage, my relatives. And I feel like we were all shaken up. I went to the hospital afterwards, and nothing happened but they just wanted to make sure I didn’t have a concussion. Coincidentally, the nurse was a Filipino man with the same name as my grandfather who passed away a few months before. I was like, wow, he was the one taking care of me and making sure I wasn’t hurt. I’m really glad that happened.”

Coldplay began Music of the spheres Tour in 2022, following the 2021 release of their album Music Spheres album. They translated that recording. Folder.
