David Duchovny faces ‘friendship failure’ with Gillian Anderson at the height of The X-Files’ popularity

David Duchovny said he had a “friendship failure” with his ‘X-Files’ co-star Gillian Anderson when the hit sci-fi series was at its peak in the 1990s Gillian Anderson when the hit sci-fi series was at its peak in the 1990s.

On Tuesday’s episode of his “Fail Better” podcast, Duchovny, who was joined by Anderson, admitted that he thought the “most complicated” part of their conversation would be addressing what he called “friendship failure.”

Duchovny said: “For a long time working on the show, we didn’t get along with each other off-camera.”

He admitted that he wasn’t sure what the conversation looked like when it came to how long they didn’t talk to each other off-camera.

“There was a lot of tension,” he said. “And it doesn’t matter, apparently, for the job because we’re both pretty crazy, I guess. “We can just go out and do what we have to do.”

Anderson agreed, noting that she and Duchovny “didn’t talk for weeks at a time” outside of work, despite Fox Mulder and Dana Scully’s intense relationship on the series. “I mean, it’s crazy that we were able to present different feelings and emotions and attraction in front of the camera, you know, and all that stuff,” he said.

Duchovny noted that they had an “instant connection” when they were first cast in the series created by Chris Carter, but eventually broke up.

Anderson said she recently started listening to his podcast: “I felt like I was learning more about you than I knew, more than I knew before.”

Duchovny added: “We know each other deeply, but we don’t know each other in a weird way.” “When you share a pivotal experience in your life (such great success with the program we have), we just know what it means to be at the center of that.”

“The X-Files” aired on Fox from 1993 to 2002. Duchovny left in season seven and Scully was paired with “Terminator 2” star Robert Patrick. Mulder returned at the beginning of the ninth season. The series was rebooted for two short seasons in 2016 and 2018, with Anderson and Duchovny returning as the iconic FBI agents.

Last year, Carter told TheWrap that Ryan Coogler had her blessing to direct the revival, and Anderson said she would consider reprising her role as Scully.
