The European Union needs, it seems, a defense commissioner, and it will have one. If nothing changes it will be the Lithuanian Andrius Kubilius, who was examined by the European Parliament on Wednesday.on a day marked by Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential elections: it is a warning for the EU’s strategic autonomy, which will have to be accelerated. Thus, Kubilius believes that the EU bloc has to increase its military spending, but not because of Trump’s triumph, but with an eye on Russia. “The threat is Putin.”he sentenced before the MEPs.
The Lithuanian takes up the challenge without much squeamishness, and made it clear to the political groups. “You can call me the commissioner of peace, not the commissioner of militarization.but “if you want peace, prepare for war,” he said to one question, and assumed that the EU “has to take charge of its own security” in view of the way events are unfolding around the globe.
Kubilius did not want to anticipate what the US plans to do in the coming years, especially in terms of aid to Ukraine, but he takes it for granted that if Washington’s support for Kiev decreases, the EU will be able to continue to support Ukraine. it will have to be the EU “that will have to take over at least a part of it.”so that Zelenski’s troops do not lose strength vis-à-vis Moscow.
More information will follow shortly.
