Democrat Sarah McBride became on Tuesday the first transgender woman to win a seat. in the U.S. Congress, according to projections of U.S. election results.
McBride, 34, has succeeded in representing Delaware in the U.S. Congress by having winning with 57.6 percent of the vote Republican challenger John Whalen III. In 2020, she became the first person who identifies as transgender to hold a state Senate seat.
“Thank you, Delaware! Thanks to your votes and your values, I am proud to be your next member of Congress. Delaware has sent a message loud and clear: we must be a country that protects reproductive freedom, ensures paid leave and affordable childcare for all of our familiesthat ensures that housing and healthcare are available to all and that this is a democracy that is big enough for everyone,” she said through her profile on the social networking site X.

During an interview with NBC television in September, McBride said his goal in Congress was to work to break partisan gridlock and pass legislation such as paid medical leave.
Projections also give victory in the state of Delaware to the Democratic candidate for the White House, Vice President Kamala Harrisagainst the Republican challenger, Donald Trump.
