The standard-bearer of the majority opposition in Venezuela, the VenezuelaEdmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, exiled in Spainheld this Wednesday the appointment of Senator Marco Rubio as U.S. Secretary of State, in Donald Trump’s next term in office, and sees it as “a great ally” to recover democracy in Venezuela.
“Marco Rubio knows first-hand the problems afflicting Venezuela and we are sure that he will be a great ally in our struggle to recover freedom and democracy in our country,” González Urrutia said on social networks during his visit to Brussels to thank the EU for its support in the same cause.
The Venezuelan politician and former diplomat assured that the Venezuelan opposition is “pleased with the appointment, for the first time in the history of the U.S., of a Hispanic as Secretary of State”.
In the same line another Venezuelan opposition leader, María Corina Machado, expressed herself from Caracas.who considered that the confirmation of Rubio as head of US diplomacy, under the mandate of Trump, who will take office as President of the Government next January, is “excellent news for all Latin America”.
Born in Miami in 1971 and considered a ‘hawk’ in foreign policyRubio is an advocate of a strong hand against China and Iran, and of sanctions on Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.
The Venezuelan opposition denounces fraud in the official result of the presidential elections of last July 18, rejected by the main opposition coalition – the United Democratic Platform (PUD) – which assures that its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, defeated current President Nicolas Maduro at the polls.
