California Gov. Gavin Newsom will not make “any pardon decision” on the convicted murders of Eric and Lyle Menendez until Attorney General-elect Nathan Hochman completes his “review and analysis” of the case, the governor’s office said in a statement Monday.
While the new sentence for the brothers was supported by outgoing Attorney General George Gascón after new evidence of sexual assault and the success of the movie “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” directed by Ryan Murphy on Netflix and the synchronized documentary “The Menendez Brothers” new. The elected Hochman has remained more reserved in his view of the case.
Hochman told “Good Morning America” on Thursday: “You really have to go beyond the Netflix documentary,” Hochman told “Good Morning America” on Thursday. “If you decide this case based on watching a Netflix documentary, you’re doing a disservice to the Menendez brothers, the families of the victims and the public.”
In response to ongoing calls and growing petitions to resentence the Menendez brothers, Governor Newsom said on Monday that Hutchman was tasked with the job of bringing justice to the case with the recent vote.
“The governor respects the district attorney’s role in ensuring justice is served and recognizes that voters have entrusted Attorney General-elect Hochman with this responsibility,” the statement from the governor’s office, obtained by TheWrap, reads. “The Governor will refer the review and analysis of Menendez’s case to the Attorney General-elect before making any pardon decision.”
