John Mulaney spoke candidly about his public battle with drug addiction and recovery in his GQ Man of the Year profile. Published Tuesday. As the outlet noted, it was clear that Monologue before recovery was “saturated with drugs like Stones records in the ’70s,” but that wasn’t fairly obvious at the time, despite his own observation that “I tried to tell everyone. “
To illustrate his point, Mullaney recounted a week in 2020 when he did so much cocaine that he was worried he was going to die. He told GQ: “I left my apartment door open. “I can’t explain the logic, but I was going to ring the doorbell and ask the doorman to run to the paramedics. I guess I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to label and explain, and I didn’t want them to have to break down the door. I just sat down on the carpet and slowly came down. And I thought, okay, this is crazy. I will slow down completely. That was like Tuesday. And on Thursday night I did it again.
His friends and colleagues, including Fred Armisen and Natasha Lyonne, intervened that year. The following weeks were complicated: Mulaney entered a rehabilitation center by his ex-wife Anne Marie Tendler entered treatment for depression, and the couple separated. Mulaney had his eldest son with his second wife, Olivia Munn, shortly afterward and officially filed for divorce from Tendler that summer.
Although he and Moon did not plan to have a child and get married, they decided to try the relationship two months before their son was born. Moon also chose to randomly test for Mulaney’s drugs during her pregnancy, something she continues to do even now that they are married and welcomed a second child.
Mulaney told the outlet: “It’s like a relief.” “I like being able to not have that question in her mind or anyone else’s mind. Something about peeing in this cup is like, ‘I’m going down this road. It gives me confidence.”
He now lives in California with Moon and their children, which the comedian admits still surprises him. She said of her son Malcolm: “His hair curls in the California air,” she said of her son Malcolm. “When we were in Chicago, he had straight hair like John Mulaney. Until my twenties. Malibu It was an interesting speech for me. It was like saying Zanzibar.“
