In May 2023, One Direction celebrated 100 days of sobriety.
He said at the time: “I feel amazing,” he said at the time. “I feel really good, and the support from the fans and everything has been really good.”
His battle began at the height of 1D mania. “The issue we had in the band – and I don’t blame anyone for this … but it seemed to me, when we were in the band, that the best way to secure us, because of our size, was to lock us in a room, and of course what minibar is in the room? “So, at a certain point, I thought, well, I’m going to have a party for one, and that seems to have continued for many, many years of my life.”
Throughout, he’s been candid about his sobriety. He recalls in June 2021 when he said he had been sober for over a month at the time: “Just until I saw myself afterward, I was like, ‘Okay, I need to fix myself. “It was like some pictures of me on a boat feeling really bloated, and I call it the pills and booze face… My face was ten times more than it is now. And I didn’t like myself very much, so I made a change.”
