Amid the fallout from Donald Trump’s recent rally, John Oliver is baffled by the former president’s apparent reaction to the backlash from Puerto Ricans.
On Sunday’s episode of last week tonightThe comedian drew attention to Trump’s recent attempt at “damage control” caused by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s set at his campaign event at Madison Square Garden, in which he described Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.”
Oliver then played a video Trump recently shared of Cuban group Los Tres de la Habana performing Trump’s song in 2020. “Oh my God, I’m voting. I’m going to vote for Donald Trump,” he said, as they sang in the clip.
“He posted it without comment. “If it’s meant to apologize to Puerto Ricans, it’s worth noting that this is a Cuban band,” Oliver noted.
“Although I admit that this is a very catchy song, and I appreciate that the lyrics are: Oh my God, I’m voting for Trump.” “It’s like someone realizing in real time that he’s on the decline.”[….]
After the Trump MSG rally, Harris delivered a rousing closing argument Tuesday in front of the White House, where an estimated 75,000 people were reportedly in attendance.
“This United States of America, we are not a vessel for the schemes of aspiring dictators,” she said. “The United States of America is the greatest idea humanity has ever devised, a nation big enough to encompass all of our dreams, strong enough to endure any crack or rift between us, and brave enough to imagine a future full of possibilities.”
The vice president added: “I pledge to look for common ground and common sense solutions to make your life better. I’m not looking to score political points. I’m looking to make progress… And for people who disagree with me – unlike Donald Trump, I don’t think people who disagree with me are the enemy. He wants to put them in jail. I will give them a seat at the table.”
After Harris made a last-minute appearance this weekend Saturday Night LiveFCC complaints about equal time prompted NBC to give Trump 90 seconds of free ad time during Sunday’s NASCAR coverage.
