Michael Caine has shared that a young Tom Cruise asked him for career advice when the pair first met 40 years ago.
Caine, a two-time Oscar winner who is now 91 years old, wrote his memoir, “Don’t Look Back, You’ll Stumble.” In an interview with Sunday Times He revealed to the newspaper that he met the future star at an event for the movie Kane Rita’s educationback in 1983.
The British actor remembers:
“I turned around and there was a young actor, very polite, asking questions about how he wasn’t just a flash in the pan. That was Tom, maybe around that time Risky business.
“I can’t remember what I said, but it obviously didn’t do him any harm! There was something special about him. He had a great attitude, this sense of poise. What matters to me is that he’s really one of the last true stars in movies. People will go see the movie just because he’s in it. Brad Pitt is a star, and Morgan Freeman has some of that quality as well. There are very few nowadays – not like John Wayne or Humphrey Bogart or Cary Grant.
Kane added that his wife Shakira had arranged a special surprise for his 90th birthday:
“[Shakira] I arranged for Tom Cruise to come for dinner at the River Café as a surprise. I was very touched.”
Kane has made more than 150 movies during his 70-year career. He won an Academy Award for Hanan and her sisters (1986) and Cider House Rules (1999).
