Shell oil company wins climate case on appeal requiring it to reduce CO2 emissions by 2030

The oil company Shell has won on Tuesday the appeal filed against a Dutch court ruling that obliged it to reduce CO2 emissions by 45% by 2030, which means the annulment of a judgment of 2021 considered a historic victory in the fight against climate change..

This company is not exempt from fighting global warming. and “precisely products of companies like Shell have generated the climate problem,” admitted the Court of Appeal on Tuesday, which considered, however, that this company alone cannot be required to stop selling oil and gas, since that part of the business will then be taken over by the competition.

In 2021, the NGO Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) had succeeded in winning the lawsuit against Shell, which required the oil company to to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45%. by 2030 compared to 2019, a ruling that had a major impact internationally.

Shell left the Netherlands shortly after that judgment and moved its head office to London, becoming a solely British companyand not half Dutch.
