Maybe.

As you can see in the latest edition of the Deadline CovenantLine podcast, it’s showtime in the U.S. Our guests are NewsNation political editor Chris Stirewalt and the creator of the Netflix political drama The DiplomatDeborah Kahn presents some hard truths, both factual and fictional.

Chris Stirewalt, who is also a broadcaster Sunday Hill on NewsNation, gives a snapshot of election night, including the counties he’ll be watching as potential leaders as results come in.

The election portrayed as an inflection point in American history has come down to pockets of undecided voters, often hard-to-reach citizens who don’t pay close attention to politics. Stirewalt says that unlike other cycles he’s covered, where the signs are starting to come out clearly about who will win, that’s not the case in this one.

Stirewalt also talks about trust in the media. As he wrote in his 2022 book. Broken News: Why the media outrage machine is dividing America and how to fight backNews consumers have become insulated from choosing which news voices they want to hear, even when it comes to basic information and facts. As he witnessed when he was at Fox News in 2020, the network’s election night predictions are now controversial and backlash-prone moments, as if the media itself has some control over the vote count.

While this election could lead to what happened in 2000, with lengthy recounts and legal challenges, Stirewalt says the difference between now and a generation ago is the potential for political violence.
