Stephen Colbert joked that this election reminds him of how the Romans felt “when Vesuvius was trying to get re-elected.”

A very concerned Stephen Colbert had a vivid metaphor for public sentiment the last night before Election Day 2024 during his monologue on “The Late Show” on Monday.

Colbert said: “We’re all, to some extent, about to witness history, whether it’s good or bad,” Colbert said. “I think that’s how the people of Pompeii felt when Vesuvius was trying to get re-elected.”

Colbert continued the joke, pretending to be an ancient Roman official and added: “Well, if the ash cloud goes this way, we’ll celebrate. If the ash cloud is heading our way, everyone is quiet. “I’m doing Charlie’s Angels.”

Colbert continued: “Of course, you don’t know what’s going to happen, which is why you turn to the experts at times like this.” “And what do the polls say?”

He then posted a video of experts who said: “It’s a flip-flop”; “Looks like a photographic finish”; “Tie”; “Tie”; “Tie”; “Tie”; “It’s too close to call”; “Too close to call.”

Colbert interrupted indignantly: “You’re so useless.” “Grow a pair, cowards. You might get a clearer prediction with the magic eight ball.

He then drew a real Magic 8 Ball. But when he looked at the response, he stated that it was “Jill Stein 2024”. Oh.

Obviously, there’s a lot more to the monologue, and you can watch it in its entirety below:
