The president-elect of the United States, the Republican Donald Trumpwon the election in the city of Springfield (Ohio), which had become famous during the campaign for the hoax promoted by the New York magnate himself on the Haitian immigrants who ate dogs and cats.
Trump got a 49.7% of the vote vs. 49.1%. of Democrat Kamala Harris, a victory of only 135 votes but significant for taking place in one of the main epicenters of the electoral campaign.
Four years ago, incumbent President Joe Biden, Democrat Joe Biden, took out more than 1,800 votes over Trump.
The president-elect used the loudspeaker of his one-on-one debate with Harris to claim that in the city of Springfield, “the people who came in,” referring to Haitians, are eating “the pets of the people who live there.”
This is a hoax that circulated during the election campaign on social networks, which caught the attention of the country’s main media outlets and was echoed, for example, by billionaire Elon Musk, Trump’s ally.
This despite the fact that local authorities, such as the mayor himself, the Republican Rob Ruehad denied it.
Springfield, a city in Ohio’s depressed ‘rust belt,’ has experienced a large influx of migrants in recent years, mainly of Haitian originthanks to the revival of its industry.
