The authorities in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk have warned of possible flooding in the area and also in the neighboring province of Dnipro following an alleged attack by the Armed Forces from Russia against the Kurakhovo dam, located in the town of the same name and in the waters of the Vovcha River.
This was stated by the governor of Donetsk, Vadim Filashkinon his official Telegram channel, where he has stressed that the attack on the dam “potentially threatens residents” of the localities on the banks of the Vovcha River, which in some sections has already raised its level by more than one meter.
However, Filashkin has stressed that at the moment no floods have been recorded, although the authorities. are closely following the evolution of the river’s flow. and are alert to the need for any intervention. “I am keeping the situation under personal control,” he said.
For his part, the mayor of Kurakhovo, Roman Padun, confirmed in statements to the national radio station Suspilne that. “water is flowing through the villages located near the dam”, but that constant attacks by the Russian Armed Forces make inspection work in the area impossible.
Padun has acknowledged that the water currents are “as if the locks were open.” and regretted that the authorities “cannot confirm the nature of the damage or the extent”.
Later, the Russian deputy Vladimir Rogov, leading a parliamentary commission on “patriotic projects”, has warned that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are also reportedly preparing a “massive attack” con the dam on the Karachekrak River, a tributary of the Dnieper and located a few kilometers east of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant.
According to Rogov, this dam is “quite large,” and nearby are located “many residential buildings”, while the attack is being prepared with the aim of preparing the ground for a future offensive on Zaporiyia. “It is a provocation, an imminent war crime,” he has assured in statements to Rossiya-1 channel.
