Donald Trump hailed a new “Golden Age of America” after a stunning victory over Kamala Harris in the US presidential election – and now world leaders are reacting to his triumph.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who famously took a pragmatic approach to Trump in 2016, wrote that he is ready to work with the next U.S. president.

“I look forward to working with you in the years ahead,” added British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “As our closest allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.”

Starmer’s Labour government team has been critical of Trump in the past, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy describing him as a “misogynistic sociopath who sympathizes with neo-Nazis.” Starmer has sought to build bridges with Trump in recent weeks, meeting him during a trip to New York in September.

Lammy’s tone was markedly different in a Wednesday morning tweet. “The UK has no greater friend than the United States, with a special relationship that both sides of the Atlantic have cherished for more than 80 years. We look forward to working with you,” he said.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, said it was “the greatest return in history”. “Your historic return to the White House offers a new beginning for America and a strong recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America,” he added.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that Italy and the United States are like two “sister nations” and that Trump’s inauguration will strengthen their “unshakable alliance, shared values and historic friendship.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a staunch Trump supporter, was one of the first to respond when the election results became clear in the race to the White House.

“Good morning Hungary! “On the way to a beautiful victory,” he wrote in a Facebook comment on a photo of himself watching CNN’s live coverage of the vote.

Orban, Europe’s longest-serving leader and Vladimir Putin’s closest ally in the European Union, has previously vowed to open “several bottles of champagne” to toast Trump.

Nigel Farage, a British lawmaker who has become a close surrogate for Trump over the years, called his victory “the most incredible political comeback of our lifetime.”
